Namaste

The ancient art of yoga, has been in practice for thousands of years. First beginning in northern India, the practice yoga would become worldwide. While yoga has been a mindful meditation exercise for many years, it is coming to light just how healthfully beneficial it is for not only the physical body, but also the mind.

Yoga and Health

Yoga has been found to improve many areas of one’s life further than just the physical body. A decrease in blood pressure and anxiety, and increase in flexibility and strength. Research has also found that yoga can help relieve depression and improve quality of sleep.

There was one particular study that compared both stretching and yoga for individuals experiencing lower-back pain. Ultimately the results of the study yielded a decrease in their symptoms as well as restored some of the functioning back.

Yoga is also a great exercise for your heart. Not simply a cardio workout, rather a mindful meditation that can help to decrease blood sugars, reduce stress, and lower blood pressures.

Practicing yoga also helps one to bring mindfulness to their inner and outer “self”. You are able to develop an awareness to what you can see your body physically doing on the outside, while becoming more aware of your inner-self presently. Becoming aware of your breathing, mindful of your thoughts, and gentle with your actions.

Becoming more attuned to yourself, you are better equip to interact with the world with a more clear and balanced mind.

A Healthful Art

There are many different variations of the practice of Yoga. The most popular in the U.S is Hath Yoga, but there is also: “Ananda, Anusara, Ashtanga, Bikram, Iyengar, Kripalu, Kundalini, Viniyoga,” as well as many others.

One of the great things about yoga, is that it can be modified. Not only can it be modified from style to style, it can also be modified to fit your particular physical needs. Chair yoga, is a great alternative for those who cannot comfortably do poses on a mat or floor, but are still looking to increase their flexibility and overall increase their health.
